When it comes to gear, are brands important? Maybe. Some would argue “skills>gear”. But I will say this: The right stuff gets you there quicker.
You can always drive from point A to point B, and cheap prices can be a welcome, but getting somewhere faster is always a priority.
This was from a quick comparison between the Fomex lights a studio I used to work in used and Broncolor Siros lights brought over for a demo by Broncolor Singapore.
That was in 2016.
It was already convincing when I saw the photos on Capture One 9 back then.
I reopened the same raw files in Capture One 12 and voila! Straight out of camera, just like before, the shots taken with the Siros were convincing – skin looked right in the shot on the right.
There was no weird yellow colourcast that gave me issues when I was shooting for the studio. My retouching crew had to fix colours day-in-day-out. Having a high volume of products to shoot daily meant time was always of the essence.
This is why I invest in Broncolor lights. I value accuracy in colours and speed. I’ve tried a few brands but to me, Broncolor just works right for me.
True, it can be real costly, but the top-notch quality of the products the brand carries justifies it.
To me, they’re the real right stuff 🙂
NOTE: This is not a paid/sponsored post. I bought my own Broncolor gear.
Other brands for your consideration which I would recommend would include Profoto, Elinchrom and Bowens (I used to work extensively with Bowens but the company is pretty much history now).
Ultimately, get the stuff that helps you and keeps you happy!
