For almost 10 years now, I have been relying on my IKEA Galant desk.
It’s a decent desk, but I realize my gear over the years are getting heavier and heavier.
With a pair of EIZO ColorEdge monitors (a CG2730 and a CG279X), and a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24″, all mounted on arms clamped to the desk, as well as accessories such as 2 Stream Deck XLs and a Stream Deck regular by Elgato Gaming, a Razer Huntsman Elite, a 15″ MacBook Pro 2018 touch bar with a full-sized Mac keyboard and trackpad, a Sound Blaster Katana, and a custom live-stream setup with a Sony A6500 and an Aputure HR672C LED panel and a Blue Yeti mic on a RODE boom arm, a couple of NAS drives that contain 6 hard drives, and an Asus Rapture ROG AC-5300 router, it’s only a matter of time before the Galant taps out and calls it a day.
And no, I wasn’t flexing. I really have all those on my desk at all times!
Now, I’m not gonna hang around and watch my desk collapse before me, with all of my gear.
“It’s time to hunt for a heavy-duty desk that can support all my equipment and still look good. The Omnidesk offers what I need.”
For many years, I’ve been going to PC Shows and I’d always linger around the Omnidesk booth like a crazed lunatic.
I see buttons and LEDs, I press. Desk goes up. Desk goes down. Desk goes up. Desk goes down. Fun times!
I remember the salesperson was very helpful and took the time to explain a thing or two in great detail about the benefits of a standing desk.
I heard Omnidesk has been around for 2 years now and they focus mainly on one type of product – modular desks. This gives me a boost of confidence in the product as companies that focus on a particular type of product are usually specialists that understand the needs of their customers – in this case they understand the customers’ needs for a good desk.
I could see that the desk was indeed of a high quality. It had a premium feel to it, especially with the powder coat surface. The controller module was also seamlessly attached to the edge of the desk. It wasn’t so intrusive by design, but it was easily accessible.
I remember that as the salesperson continued sharing about the desk, I was still pressing buttons. Desk goes up. Desk goes down. Desk goes up. Desk goes down. The salesperson also shared that I could set presets. Nice!
It was only when my wife insisted that we move onto the next booth did I tear myself away from the Omnidesk booth.
I remember the pink one. It was an exclusive, I think. Sexy. But alas, my pockets weren’t deep enough back then to afford the Omnidesk and I could only dream. All I could do was look at the catalog and fill up that wishlist.
Fast forward a few years, and I am enjoying better job prospects. The Art of Mezame is now shooting more commercial works.
It was at a client’s shoot that I chanced upon another Omnidesk! Again, buttons were pressed, and I noticed just how easy it was to work with a laptop on it. I was shooting tethered and my MacBook Pro was on the desk at a good level. I did not have to bend down to reach for my laptop while working!
I remember my wishlist 😉
At a tender age of 37, I can now feel the need for stretching my legs every now and then while at work. Retouching and editing images can be a test of the human nerves.
Do you want to stay on and work through the night while seated comfortably, and risk health issues down the road? Or do you want to stand up once in a while and let the blood flow and stretch all those muscles that have bunched up overtime while seated?
Now, every hardworking photographer would know that time spent away from work is time delayed. Not good for productivity!
“2020 happened (oh what a year it has been so far) and the Omnidesk Pro 2020 was released. It was love at first sight.“
I began looking through Omnidesk’s website and was surprised to see that the desk met my budget! They had an ongoing work-from-home sale and I thought this was an opportune time to upgrade my desk. I was already doing live-streaming actively, running The A-MEZ-ING Live Show on Twitch twice a week, and I am certain I will make full use of the desk!
I started putting everything together in the easy-to-explore buying section. I couldn’t help but notice in the corner of my eye a small window that goes up and down. It’s showing in real-time recent purchases by other folks! I am not the only one browsing and shopping. There was a weird sense of connection with perfect strangers. A sense of camaraderie. We bonded over the shopping spree.
I added accessories such as Speaker Mount (perfect for my Katana), PC Mount, Mounted Powerbar, Power Clamp, and of course RGB LED Lights. I just love having atmospheric ambient lighting that I can control with Google Assistant. The cable management bar was on promo and that was added too.
I understand that Omnidesks are designed to be modular, and had room and possibilities for upgrades. I decided to just go all out and went with the largest option for the top.
“It has everything now. Truly, the only desk I would ever need.”
I am no artist when it comes to building stuff so I opted for delivery with onsite assembly. The overall process was easy, and Omnidesk was professional in handling sales and after-sales support. They sent SMSes to update and confirm delivery too.
Within a week or so, two gentlemen, one of whom was called Syukry, came down to help set up my Omnidesk Pro 2020. Both were professional and did their job fast and were patient in explaining functions, and what I had to do to complete my setup, etc.
The dual motor that controlled the lifting mechanism worked quietly and fast. The 4 preset buttons were easy to program as well. With weighted feet, and a heavy duty alloy chassis and reinforced steel alloy legs, I am confident about the stability of the desk.
In fact, I trust the desk so much, I immediately set up my displays without worry.
As I was setting up my cable management, I had a go with the presets to see if the anti-collision features work. True enough, the desk on sensing that there was me underneath, quickly went up again, saving me from an untimely demise (haha). I think for users with kids, or users with things underneath their desks (like me), this is a huge safety feature. To further enhance the safety of the desk, there’s also a Child-Lock function to lock your preferred height.
The speed of the desk’s lift is rated at 4.0cm/s. I’d take their word for it as it does seem fast to me.
From the beautiful black powder coated surface, to the legs with a small footprint, and modular design, I can only say good things about the Omnidesk Pro 2020.
It’s been one week since I started using the desk and I am switching effortlessly between standing and sitting while working. My Apple Watch reminds me to stand up once in a while, and this works well with the Omnidesk Pro 2020. I’d stand up and stretch my legs, and boy, it feels so good.
I have absolutely no complaint. I am very, very happy.
I am still pressing buttons for fun though. Desk goes up. Desk goes down. Desk goes up. Desk goes down.
